Update Details: If the Group is already registered with HMRC, then you can update any details such as the bank account or officials either online or by post. To update them online you will need to have the relevant details such as Government Gateway ID, password and authentication app, as well as some details of the group’s registration such as the group’s contact details and the group’s HMRC Charity Reference Number, etc, otherwise update the details by post.

If you know the Group’s HMRC Charity Reference then the first two steps below can be done in parallel.

If you do not know the Group’s HMRC Charity Reference Number, then explain that the Charity Reference is not known and ask for the reference on the form.

  • Use the ChV1 Change form (download here) (HMRC advice here) to update the Group’s details such as the contact details for the authorised official and at least 2 responsible persons (i.e. trustees)
  • Once you know the Group’s HMRC Charity Reference, if the group does not yet have a Government Gateway ID, you can create one for the Group to access HMRC online services (Start Here) (advice here). Select ‘Sign in’ then ‘Create sign in details’.
  • Once a and b are done, make sure you activate your Charities Online account.
